Seattle P-I: JJ Putz was upset after not being brought in for the save in Tuesday night’s game.
Prospect Insider: Brandon Morrow’s latest start wasn’t as successful as it could have been, but he is still on track. Sidebar: Top prospects Greg Halman and Adam Moore, as well as Joe Woerman, Gabby Hernandez, Justin Thomas and […]

A lot is being made about this “race for Stephen Strasburg,” but does Seattle really have to have the worst record in all of baseball to get him? Having the first pick in next summer’s draft would certainly help their chances at obtaining him, but perhaps they could make due with the second or even […]

In the year 2000 our Seattle Mariners didn’t worry about their shortstop’s performance. Alex Rodriguez held down the position from both sides of the ball. Defensively he was easily a top five defender and offensively he hit .316 with 41 homers while walking 100 times. 2000 was his last season in Seattle colors as he left via […]

Race for Strasburg: I can’t root for the Mariners to lose. A lot of fans are making a lot of the race for last place. Obviously the last place team gets the first pick in next June’s draft, and that first (and possibly second) pick likely means the chance to draft Stephan Strasburg. Don’t get me wrong, […]

The Replacement Level Yankees Weblog put together a stat backed list of the American League’s least valuable players. Seattle Mariners players are up and down the list. I’m shocked!
1.) Miguel Batista
3.) Carlos Silva
4.) Richie Sexson
8.) Jose Vidro
10.) Eric O’Flaherty
14.) Wlad Balentien
24.) Kenji Johjima
28.) Mark Lowe
48.) Miguel Cairo
While a lot of us might disagree on the […]

Just got back from PGE Park after checking out Brandon Morrow’s latest start, which was a true gem. He stretched himself to 4.2 innings while striking out 10 and walking just one. The only two hits he gave up came in the third inning. One was a chopper back to Morrow that he attempted to […]

Below is the post about top prospect Carlos Triunfel being promoted to AA. I guess there was some false reports out there, possibly stemming from Triunfel’s lineup absence. Turns out, Triunfel strained his groin a bit and was getting the day off. He could still be promoted, a possibility under consideration by the organization, but […]

I took the weekend off from BBTing. Didn’t read the papers or the blogosphere, didn’t watch any games; nothing. It was a nice break from the typically frustrated and confusing world of Seattle Mariners baseball. I did watch the Olympics, however. I saw Michael Phelps get his seventh and eighth, which was great, but the most […]

The Minnesota Twins were the team that claimed Jarrod Washburn, according to various sources. They don’t need starting pitching, so this was obviously a move to block the Detroit Tigers or Chicago White Sox from getting him. The Tigers claimed Raul Ibanez but a deal couldn’t be worked out, which isn’t a shocker.
Minnesota’s block makes interim […]

Jarrod Washburn and Raul Ibanez have been claimed on waivers. There has been a lot of conflicting reports out there on this but Ken Rosenthal has the scoop, saying both players have indeed been claimed. Washburn was not claimed by the Yankees. The Mariners have until tomorrow to work out a trade with whatever team […]

Game 1: Jarrod Washburn vs. Jon Garland
Game 2: Felix Hernandez vs. Ervin Santana
Coming into the season a lot of us expected, or at least hoped, that games like these would mean a lot more. In reality, this game is about as meaningless as it gets. Obviously the Mariners aren’t playing for anything, nor can they […]

Back in April I called for Kenji Johjima’s benching based on opposing hitters’ batting averages against Seattle pitchers when he was behind the plate compared to when other catchers were behind the plate. Here’s an excerpt from the old post:
Opponents hit .272 against Felix Hernandez when caught by Johjima, but only .243 when backup Jaime Burke […]

When Geoff Baker reported that Jarrod Washburn had cleared waivers, I was a little skeptical because it had just come out earlier that morning that Washburn was even placed on waivers, and there is supposed to be a three day waiting period for teams to put claims in. I let it go, but others didn’t.
From the […]

If it’s any consolation, Jeff Clement’s blunder on Sunday, pictured below, was only 7th on Baseball Tonight’s “Not Web Gems” collection. First place went to Richie Sexson. Sexson, playing first for the Yankees, was about to break towards homeplate on a bunt when Andy Pettitte, who is known for his deceptive pickoff move, threw towards […]

National baseball writers, local insiders and casual bloggers keep coming back to the bizarre three year extension given to catcher Kenji Johjima earlier in the season, and speculating on how to get it off the books.
Such a move is needed, because Seattle’s catching depth in the upper levels is one of their strengths. Jeff Clement […]

If you didn’t catch Saturday night’s game, Willie Bloomquist brutally pulled his hamstring beating out a potential double play late in the game. He had to be helped off the field, and manager Jim Riggleman didn’t sound optimistic after the game. This is looking like an automatic trip to the DL for Willie.
So.. who takes […]

Miguel Batista has been so awful that anyone who replaces him almost seems like they’re Felix caliber! Okay, maybe not, but I’m glad to have a new face in the rotation.
Check out Ryan Rowland-Smith’s blog about his promotion, full of fun insight.

Interim GM Lee Pelekoudas has his work cut out for him. He blew the chance at having Jarrod Washburn’s salary erased by trying to squeeze out some worthwhile talent from the New York Yankees (reportedly). The theory was that he could ask high before the July 31st deadline because once that deadline passed Washburn could […]

Miguel Batista has been told that he is no longer in the rotation, at least for his next start, according to John Hickey. This was expected, and in all likelihood Ryan Rowland-Smith will be promoted to fill the rotation spot on Saturday, at which time Jared Wells should find himself back in Tacoma as Batista […]
