Zduriencik Acquires First Player
by Jon Shields ~ November 1st, 2008
As I mentioned in the J.J. Hardy post and I’m sure you know, GMs love to bring in players they’re familiar with when changing teams, and Jack Zduriencik has brought in his first guy.
24 year old Steve Moss has been signed to a minor league contract with Seattle. He was drafted in the 29th round by Zduriencik and the Brewers back in 2002, but never made it higher than AA before becoming a six year minor league free agent and signing with the independant Golden Baseball League (GBL) Long Beach Armada.
Moss hit .299/.375/.515 with 10 homers and 14 steals in 264 at bats with Long Beach this past season. Throughout his minor league career Moss was always able to draw more than his fair share of walks even when struggling offensively, which is a great asset to have.
Moss is known as a great defender and was called the best defensive center fielder in the GBL by his manager, which is backed up by the gold glove he won. He was also known as the best defensive center fielder in the Brewers organization in his early years.
I’m not sure what the plan is for Moss, but depth is never a bad thing.

This seems like it would be a low risk - medium reward, if he amounts to anything. If he doesn’t, it won’t hurt us at all. His skill set is exactly what the Mariners are in need of, OBP and defense.

Jon, I appreciate and enjoy your news about this Japanese pitcher and Moss. For some reason I seem to have more confidence in Mr Z to acquire reasonable talent- more than Bavasi. So he is acquiring players who play D and good OBP. This does not seem so hard to do.

Good sign very nice OPS in the independant league. We’ll see if maybe he learned something over there.
