Yuni to Royals Rumor

by Jon Shields ~ November 5th, 2008

Larry Stone reminded us in today’s paper that former GM Bill Bavasi passed up on a deal that would have sent Yuniesky Betancourt to the Kansas City Royals for Billy Butler two offseasons ago.  Obviously that was a huge mistake, as Betancourt is arguably the worst starting shortstop in all of baseball.

Fortunately for us, it appears that the Royals terrible GM Dayton Moore still likes Betancourt.  From John Hickey:

One of the rumors going around the GM meetings is that the Kansas City Royals want to pry shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt from the Mariners.

That doesn’t mean that Butler is still on the table, but given the Kansas City logjam among 1B/DH types there is a good chance that someone much more valuable than Betancourt could be had.  If we could get Butler or Kila Ka’aihue I would be more than estatic, and Moore is such a bad GM it seems very possible.  Just about anyone would be a solid return, though.  We’ll keep an eye on it.

Any of the 1B/DH guys they have not named Gload would be great news.

Trading nothing or something is always good.

I would trade Yuni to KC for Billy Butler or Kila Ka’aihue. Kila hasn’t proven he can hit big league pitching yet, but he’s a lefty and tore up the minors last year. .314 avg, 34 hr, 100 rbi and a 104/67 BB/K ratio. Since Jacobs is a lefty also, KC might want to move another lefty instead of Butler.

“More than Estatic”- is an understatement. both players are a sure shot to succeed in the show, and we could use a move like this to upgrade all around. again, obviously this would leave a void at SS, but the more moves to get the team away from last years roster, the better.
