M’s to Sign Callix Crabbe? [OFFICIAL]
by Jon Shields ~ November 26th, 2008
The Seattle Mariners are on the verge of signing (or have already signed) Callix Crabbe, according to an unconfirmed source. It is currently unknown whether this is a minor league, major league or split contract.
I have briefly mentioned Crabbe as a minor league free agent Seattle could take a look at to fill the utility vacancy left by Willie Bloomquist. He’s a scrappy little guy that broadcaster Rick Rizzs will love, as he’s listed at just 5′7″ and 170-185 lbs depending on where you look.
Crabbe, a product of the Virgin Islands, puts the ball in play, walks more than he strikes out, and has a career minor league line of .276/.368/.382. The 25 year old has logged time at seven positions throughout his minor league career, and played four positions in limited time with the Padres last season. He is also a threat on the basepaths, stealing 161 bases in 7 pro seasons.
This isn’t an impact move, but it is a smart move. There is no need to spend money on bench players, so getting a versatile guy for league minimum is the way to go. Bill Bavasi probably would have given Juan Uribe or even Willie Bloomquist himself a couple million to fill the same role.
Now let’s see if this source’s info holds up…
UPDATE: Crabbe has been signed, according to Baseball America.

I would guess is a minor league deal with a spring training invite. Lots of spots up for grabs next season, he could wrangle one away from Hulett or Morse.
