M’s Sign Bladergroen
by Jon Shields ~ November 12th, 2008
Jack Zduriencik has brought in his second player as Seattle GM, inking independent leaguer Ian Bladergroen to a minor league deal.
This is a nice little pickup. Bladergroen used to be a top-5 prospect in the New York Mets organization before being dealt to Boston in 2005. He’s a left-handed hitting first baseman with legitimate pop and good plate discipline to boot. Bladergroen probably qualifies as AA roster filler, but could be a nice surprise if he can stay healthy.
Full stats here. Larry LaRue with the news.

Chris Berman called me after this signing.

You can never have too much depth. I can’t wait to see what GMZ plans to do at the Major League level.

We don’t have depth at 1st, which is why this looks really good.
As for MLB level, I don’t know if he can do all that much. It will be hard to get any kind of return on Washburn, Batista, or Silva.
