M’s Ink Brito
by Jon Shields ~ November 28th, 2008
I don’t plan on mentioning every single minor leaguer Seattle brings in, but that’s how it probably seems. From here on out I’ll only be mentioning the notables.
Seattle has apparently signed 1B/OF Javier Brito and OF Mel Stocker to minor league contracts.
Stocker isn’t the notable one. His ability to remain a professional baseball players lies in his speed and base stealing abilities. The 28 year old could be an option for Seattle’s bench, but Seattle should have better options for that fourth outfielder position.
Brito is worth briefly discussing. The 25 year old has a career minor league line of .306/.398/.481, and could add good depth to AAA Tacoma and possibly Seattle in 2009.
The right handed hitting Brito brings to the table one of the things the Seattle Mariners organization lacks as a whole, as he was named by Baseball America as having the best strikezone discipline in the Arizona Diamondbacks system last offseason. He walks a ton, nearly twice as much as the average player, and has some solid gap power to go along with it.
I’m not sure how well he handles the outfield, but he has been playing out there more and more since starting his career primarily as a first baseman. If he can remain in the outfield his value jumps up a bit.
I won’t spend any more time talking about him, but you can review his complete statistics at Baseball-Reference, Statcorner and Fangraphs. Brito isn’t a top prospect, but could fall in the 15-20 range in Seattle’s organization, making this another nice little pickup by new GM Jack Zduriencik.
