Hoyer Declines As Well
by Jon Shields ~ October 13th, 2008
Boston Red Sox Assistant GM Jed Hoyer is the latest to turn down Seattle’s offer to interview. Hoyer was another young and highly regarded candidate who has had the opportunity to learn behind one of the best GMs in the game, Theo Epstein.
While it’s discouraging that Hoyer joins Kevin Towers, Paul DePodesta, Greg Hahn, Chris Antonetti and David Forst as candidates that are unwilling or unable to interview, it’s still extremely encouraging to see the Mariners reaching out to these types; guys they would have never considered last time around.
With all of these good candidates declining, will CEO Howard Lincoln and President Chuck Armstrong be willing to choose from the small pool of good candidates they dohave in Jerry DiPoto, Peter Woodfork, Kim Ng and Tony LaCava, or will they fill their interview quota with bad options such as John Hart, Randy Smith or Mike Avila? I fear and expect the latter.

Why? This one makes no sense at all. Hoyer is not going to be GM is Boston, Theo has that job locked up.
Antonetti I understand. Forst as well. But Hoyer, I don’t get this one.

Well, if you’re a highly regarded GM prospect do you really want to risk your reputation in a tough situation with the Mariners? Hoyer will get opportunites with better run organizations in the next couple years, even if Epstein is firmly entrenched in front of him in Boston.

Thats the thing though. Any GM can come in here and if they fix the situation they can be viewed as a savior. The thing that is probably scaring these guys off is Armstrong and his public comments.
Lower budget.
Increased meddling.
Needing permission for everything.
If I was a potential GM candidate and I read that article by Jim Street, I might decline that interview as well.
But still, anyone who comes in here and fixes the problem with be viewed as a savior, that should be enough.
But hey Tweedledee and Tweedledum I’m sure are scaring off a fair share of candidates.
