Strasburg Lining

by Jon Shields ~ September 20th, 2008

Team PCT W L Games Left
Seattle Mariners .370  57  97 8
Washington Nationals .374  58  97 7
San Diego Padres .387  60  95 7

Seattle is in the midst of a 10 game losing streak, and has had a tough time scoring runs since they started “playing the kids,” making it very apparent that these youngsters are not ready for regular MLB duty– at least from an offensive standpoint.

That said, their performances shouldn’t a surprise.  Rob Johnson had the best season of his career at AAA Tacoma this season, but he projects as a backup catcher and nothing more.  Bryan LaHair is also thought to be a backup in the future.  Luis Valbuena is a fringe prospect, and it’s not known whether or not he’ll put the skills together to be an MLB starter.  We’ll have a better idea where he stands after he gets a full season at the AAA level.  Matt Tuiasosopo has more upside than any of the players listed thus far, but most believe he needs at least another full year in Tacoma.

I’m glad I’ve gotten the chance to get a better look at these players, but the new car smell has worn off and the games are no longer fun to watch.  I hope the new GM has a plan to have this team a bit more competitive.

As hard as it is to watch, at least Seattle is getting closer to securing the number one pick in next summer’s draft.  It will be the first time Seattle has had the first pick since they drafted Alex Rodriguez in 1993.

Darn if the Padres got the first pick they would choose Strasburg you see I’m a fan of Grant Green but I will not complain if we choose Strasburg because he is really good and a “can’t miss” player but i don’t won’t us to lose 100 and if we win the next 7 games to avoid 100 we will definitely fall to 3rd…

I say “lose baby lose” at this point all it can do is help us in the long run with a great pick, hopefully Stras.Hey Slurve I’m not familiar with Grant can you give an update/bio on him?

What could possibly be better for the future of this team than losing every single game for the rest of the season? Rooting against the M’s at present moment is more intense than rooting for them anyway. Who cares if Miguel Cairo wins the game with an RBI single in the 9th? Woo-hoo. Let’s see if we can give up and score less runs in the final eight games than ever before. Let’s take a beating. An AL West wood shampoo. Where’s the woodshed? Right here, baby!

Grant Green is basically Tulo with more power and maybe the best hitter the 09 draft has to offer and he is a SS who can field his position and will stay there.

If you want any more info on the draft look here http://draftinfo.wordpress.com/2008/08/27/updated-2009-mlb-draft-prospects-1-20/

@drivindave - Rob T. posted some additional info on Grant Green in the comments of this post:

I wouldn’t say he’s the best hitter in the draft– I think that distinction is going to Ackley– but Green will go in the top three or four picks probably.
