Jeff Clement Done for 2008

by Jon Shields ~ September 7th, 2008

On Tuesday Jeff Clement will have season ending knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

This isn’t the first time he’s had knee trouble.  Hopefully this type of thing will push him out from behind the plate sooner than later so that Rob Johnson and/or Adam Moore can be utilized correctly in the next couple of seasons.

I have a question: I read that the Royals are interested in signing both Furcal and Ibanez as free agents this winter. If Furcal is a type-A free agent, which team would receive their second round draft pick? Would the other team get their third round pick? How do they decide who gets the pick?

Furcal’s long DL stint this season has taken away his Type-A status. IF he was a Type-A, the Dodgers would get the picks.

Raul will be a Type-A free agent. Because of this Seattle would rather have him sign elsewhere. Seattle will receive a “sandwich” pick in the supplimental first round (usually around the 31st to 45th overall picks) no matter where he signs. Typically the team losing a Type-A free agent would receiving a first round pick as well from the team that signs him, but not if that team’s first round pick is 15th overall or better. In that case, the team losing the free agent would get the second round pick.

Since the Royals are currently in line to have the 5th or 6th overall pick in next year’s draft, Seattle would get a sandwich pick and a 2nd round pick. If he signs with a “good” team– one that has a first round pick between 16th and 30th overall– then Seattle would get the first round pick.

That said, it doesn’t look like many of the “good” teams would be interested in Raul. Maybe the Blue Jays, Mets and Rays, but not likely.

I hope that helps, but it may have come across as confusing. For more info:
