Happy RRS Day!
by Jon Shields ~ August 9th, 2008
Miguel Batista has been so awful that anyone who replaces him almost seems like they’re Felix caliber! Okay, maybe not, but I’m glad to have a new face in the rotation.
Check out Ryan Rowland-Smith’s blog about his promotion, full of fun insight.

We’ve got to DH him more often.
3 August 9th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Okay, I’ve counted 26,823 empty seats in the stands. Isn’t anyone online tonight? Thought-provoking question: The Ray’s payroll is $43,820,597 and they are in 1st place in the AL East. There is a player in the AL East who is on a third place team who will be making $27,500,000 this year. Could he possibly be worth it?
4 August 9th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
Beautiful double play. I like these kids.
5 August 9th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Who are these guys? If I get to do it all, I’m going to dub Mr. Ryan Rowland-Smith, “Prince Hyphen”.
6 August 9th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Nice catchs by Balentien.
7 August 9th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
I spelled catches wrong on purpose, but no one noticed. This is kind of cool.
8 August 9th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
I’ve got to do the standard Yuni comment, “He swings at everything that is not a strike.” Question, to no one in particular, “Why isn’t Jeff Clement in the line up tonight?” If we are trying out the kids, he’s got to face right-handed pitchers eventually, let him do it tonight. We already know what Joh can do and we’ve committed an amazing amount of $$ to him over the next several years.

Hey Sinking Away! Welcome to the site! Sorry for the lack on in-game discussion.. not enough active users on this site. We’ve only been in business here for a few months. Tell anyone you can about the site here and maybe we can get this discussion a little less one sided!
10 August 9th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
And I have no idea why Clement isn’t playing. He should be in there every possible chance he gets. Johjima is just an overpaid backup at this point.
11 August 9th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Just joining this game in the 5th.. busy Saturday. RRS looking good? Looks like just one mistake so far based on the boxscore.
12 August 9th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
1 mistake and low pitch count going into the 6th, looking like a much better starter that Batista/Silva, and the price is so right.
13 August 9th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
RRS Looks pretty solid. He had a rough inning in the fifth where he gave up some walks, but he got out of it without giving up any runs.
His curveball looks outstanding as he is throwing it for strikes to get ahead in the count.
14 August 9th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
RRS could be a good back-end starter for a long time, which is, as discussed here, so so so important.
15 August 9th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Yeah, I really like having him in the rotation.
On a side note, Lopez looks really, really bad on defense today.
16 August 9th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Lopez looks bad everyday. If he could have made that transfer we’d be out of this inning. Now we’re losing…
17 August 9th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
“Goodness Gracious”, (Simms). What else can you say?
18 August 9th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
He muffed a double play ball really bad earlier too. He tried to flip it to Yuni but it barely got out of his glove. I think he needs a day off. I also think a game like today proves you right when arguing lopez may be better off moving to third base someday….
19 August 9th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Ugh.. finally out of it. That was just awful.
Anyway, I think I’ll bring back the ’series thread’ after the Rays depart and see how it does. Thoughts?
20 August 9th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Wouldn’t hurt to try it. I’m usually not online during games, but if i’m around a computer i’ll check in and see if anyone is chatting about the game.
…Unless of course it’s during an inning like that last one. That sucked.
21 August 9th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Kenji going the other way for a basehit???? What’s happening to this world!?!
22 August 9th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
What happens to Beltre is Lopez moves to 3B? Beltre is so good at 3B. Do you see him playing 2nd? What about SS (a severe deficiency this year, unless we can get Yuni back on track for 2009) what happened to him (I know he’s young, but he was so much better, younger)?
23 August 9th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
No no.. once Beltre leaves after next year. I dunno if it happens, especially is Tuiasosopo figures things out, but it is an option. The post Brandon was referring to can be read here.
24 August 9th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
I don’t know what a “series thread” is, but if it’s something going on throughout the game, please do. As much as I liked being the only one to comment thru 5, I’d like some kind of response. I can get out of control without feedback. With Beltre leaving, I’m getting the feeling the FO might think Lopez to 3rd, and a place for Willie. Not a pleasant thought at all.
25 August 9th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Here’s an example of a Series Thread.
Just one discussion post per series since we don’t have enough people online during the game to make daily game thread’s worthwhile.
Willie is a free agent after the season (notice he’s playing his best baseball ever).
26 August 9th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
I would prefer Willie to betancourt at SS Sinking…
27 August 9th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
^for sure. He’s turning into an ineffective butterball.
28 August 9th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
I’m glad i’m not the only one who thinks that. Willie has looked really good lately and he actually hustles and plays good defense. All things Yuni has struggled with lately.
I bet Riggs will bench him tomorrow after that second error (even though lahair should have dug that out easily)
29 August 9th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Bloomquist isn’t a great defender either. Not much range at SS, but he doesn’t goof the easy plays like Betancourt does. And offensively, while he doesn’t offer a lot, at least he sees and fouls off a lot of pitches and wears the pitcher down a bit.
30 August 9th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
I think he has better range than Yuni, but not a great arm.
Offensively I agre with your assesment, but don’t forget that he’s got great speed and doesn’t hesitate to steal a base. Bloomquist just adds so much more to the lineup than yuni does in my opinion.
31 August 9th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
I’m switching back and forth between the ballgame and the olympics. Michael Phelps is about to swim for his first medal.
32 August 9th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
Aren’t they still in the qualifyings? I was watching swimming earlier today and it was all for getting into races in the coming days.
33 August 9th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
New world record! His first gold!
34 August 9th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
That was an impressive swim by Phelps
..and don’t look now, but the mariners are threatening. Down by one, runner on second, no outs…
scratch that, yuni just tried advancing the runner with a bunt and he popped out.
35 August 9th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Ok, Thanks for explaing “series treads” to me. I agree that Willie is a much better baserunner than almost anyone. He’s also a better glove than Yuni’s been of late. I just can’t think of him as a starting player in any position other than giving someone a day off. He’s great off the bench, but everyday, I don’t think so. If the choice is between Yuni of late and Willie, I guess that makes sense, but we need a regular SS, not some one who is a great utility player at a lot of positions, but not a starter in any of them. Again, let Ichiro DH more often, especially now that we are looking at the kids.
36 August 9th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Ahh! Missed those 2 runs!
37 August 9th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Willie really picked it up when he was getting regular AB’s in center field and shortstop while yuni was hurt. His batting average went up a lot during that time also. What’s he at right now? .285?
38 August 9th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Bring him home LaHair.
39 August 9th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
I’d love to face a submariner just once.
I wouldn’t mind bringing Hulett up to play SS, but his defense is shotty at best as well. At least he has some pop
40 August 9th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
What’s up with Burke on, where’s Clement?
41 August 9th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
Clement pinch hit for Johjima, then Cairo pinch ran, so Burke is the only catcher left.
42 August 9th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Hulett would work too.
I faced a few sidearmers in my day, but no true submariners. I don’t think i’d like it.
Burke is probably playing because he actually has good defense. With Putz on the mound, a catcher who can block wild pitches in the dirt is probably a good idea….
43 August 9th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
At least Putz’s velocity is back, though the pinpoint control from last year is still missing.
44 August 9th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
Betancourt trying to proove us wrong!
45 August 9th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
That was an awesome catch…i’m not gonna lie.
All we had to do is talk crap about him and i knew he’d get it going :p
46 August 9th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
JJ pitch count was 42 striking out Jose Pena. Hinske is next and he’s out. Let’s finish this off.
47 August 9th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
…and a base hit for yuni
48 August 9th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Alright walkoff time c’mon!
I-CHI-RO!
I-CHI-RO!
49 August 9th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
We should DH him more often.
50 August 9th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Simms is doing his best to jinx willie..
“willie..probably the best bunter on the team…and he fouls off the bunt attempt”
51 August 9th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
You have to be freaking kidding me.
Willie just blew up his hammy…i think i’m gonna stop calling for certain m’s to play more often
52 August 9th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Ouch! The second best legs on the team is hurt.
53 August 9th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Washburn, please.
54 August 9th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Tug Hulett just got his callup, I’d say. That looks mad painful.
55 August 9th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
I bet he’s out possibly for the year. that looked really bad.
Walking the sacks full for beltre…hmmm…this is a great game.
56 August 9th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
5 infielders defending? That’s a bit much for the “worst team in baseball”.
57 August 9th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Maddon likes to do that. Mariners did it a few years ago in Minnesota with Rafael Bornigal.
Just need a flyball…
58 August 9th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
Score, anyone?
59 August 9th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
ugh.. Mariners baseball 2008.
60 August 9th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
7-7 top of the 11th coming up
Beltre just grounded into a double play with the bases juiced in the tenth…
61 August 9th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
No kidding Jon…but hey, at least joh didn’t do it this time, right?
62 August 9th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
Yeah. If it had been Joh I would’ve become a permanent Rays or Marlins fan.
No DH for us.
63 August 9th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Batista is pitching…crap
64 August 9th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Anyone see Silva’s comments the other night?
65 August 9th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
Thanks for the loss, Batista. NO reason to walk Zobrist.
Tim - Silva’s comments were ridiculous. I’m glad Riggleman addressed them the way he did.
66 August 9th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
I didn’t see them…anyone have a link to silva’s comments?
67 August 9th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
Same, Jon. Speaks volumes about a man’s character when he can’t admit he’s a crap pitcher but blames it on everyone else.
68 August 9th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Brandon . . .
http://seattle.mariners.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080809&content_id=3281009&vkey=news_sea&fext=.jsp&c_id=sea
69 August 9th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
can’t believe the mariners blew that oppurtunity in the 10th. there are reasons why they are in last place…and there’s one of them.
70 August 9th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Thanks for the link. That was ridiculous on Silva’s part. Just what we need, a $48 million cancer in the clubhouse.
Maybe he should be less selfish and decide to take a pay cut down to what he deserves. Riggleman did a good job in how he responded.
71 August 9th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
M’s lose.
Exciting game at least. Batista deserves 2 or 3 loses for that. Walking their worst hitter? C’mon…
72 August 9th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
When things aren’t going well, things aren’t going well. What happens to the first round pick when two or three teams are tied for worst record in baseball? How does does the pick go?
73 August 9th, 2008 at 11:41 pm
Can’t say I’m surprised. Anyone else seeing a 100 loss season?
74 August 9th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
Wouldn’t be surprised in the least if we lost 100. Not after watching us beat ourselves as many times as we did tonight.
75 August 9th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
Brandon - I think Geoff Baker has more quotes from Silva and Riggleman, so check his site. Not positive, but I think Jim Street cut some stuff out.
76 August 9th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
alright i’ll take a look at it tomorrow…i’m off for now.
Hopefully we can get to jackson tomorrow.
77 August 9th, 2008 at 11:50 pm
Sinking Feeling - If two teams have an identical record, the team with the worst record the year before get the pick. So if we tie for the worst record in baseball with the Washington Nationals this season, they would get first pick since we had a better record last year.
