Brief Weekend Review

by Jon Shields ~ August 18th, 2008

I took the weekend off from BBTing.  Didn’t read the papers or the blogosphere, didn’t watch any games; nothing.  It was a nice break from the typically frustrated and confusing world of Seattle Mariners baseball.  I did watch the Olympics, however.  I saw Michael Phelps get his seventh and eighth, which was great, but the most impressive single performance I’ve seen this Olympic games was Usain Bolt’s utter domination in the 100 meter dash.  My jaw literally dropped!  I also spent some time with some old friends that I haven’t seen in about five or six years, and spent a lot of time with my beautiful niece and other family.  Now it’s time to check back in on the Mariners.

Seattle’s top draftpick hasn’t been signed just yet, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be.  The deadline commonly referred to only applies to underclassmen, not college seniors such as Fields.

Carlos Silva was placed on the 15-day disabled list with “arm fatigue,” AKA total suckage.  Any move to get him out of the rotation is a good move.  Feierabend was recalled and beat up by the Twinkies, but I’d still rather see him in the rotation than Silva.  It would be great if he can prove to be a reliable back of the rotation arm, but he’s far from establishing himself as such a player.  There is a theory floating around that he is one of those dreaded “4-A players,” or someone that can find success in AAA but not in the bigs.  Only time will tell if Feierabend can get big league hitters out on a consistent basis.

This was determined before the weekend, but the Twins genuinely wanted Jarrod Washburn, and it wasn’t a block move.  Also, Boof Bonser wasn’t discussed, but Nick Blackburn was, which is an absolute joke.  More on Pelekoudas’ decision not to dump salary and the direction of the team later.

Richie Sexson was dumped by the Yankees.  He was hitting lefties, which was what he was brought in to do, so I’m guessing that the Bronx Bombers are half-throwing in the towel and letting some youth get playing time.

Obviously that’s a very broad overview and I skipped some stuff, but now I’m caught up and can return you to your regularly scheduled BBT programming!

I’m truly sorry that this is what you have to come back to after a nice weekend.

((*attempts to avoid my frustration with this team*))

So when does Usain Bolt run again? We should sign him and use him as a pinch runner!

Funny you say that, I was thinking that Usain Bolt would be a good football deep ball threat… Walter Dix would be a nice bench fresh legs guy…

I’m thinking they’d both rather be sprinters than baseball benchwarmers…

Quinn - I actually thought that too about Bolt. He looks the part, though he’d have to beef up a bit.

This is provided he has the hands to couple with the burners on his feet.

Hmmm…so….you think Sexson would be interested in signing with the Beavers to play for his true home town team?….Or do you think AAA pitching would figure out how to strike him out also?

….And I didn’t watch much Mariners baseball either this weekend Jon…or really that much last week at all for that matter with the Olympics…

…and I’m willing to guess that Bolt couldn’t catch a football to save his life…

Oh yeah…Bolt ran tonight in the 200 m semis and pretty much started jogging with about 30 meters left and still won the heat….

….You know things are bad in Mariner land when we don’t want to talk about how bad things suck on a Mariner dedicated blog…
