Yanks Need a Catcher

by Jon Shields ~ July 21st, 2008

The New York Yankees are in need of a catcher now that Jorge Posada has been shut down again, perhaps for the duration of the 2008 season this time.

I laughed at myself the first time I thought of the Yankees possibly being interested in Johjima considering how awful he’s been this season, but then a got a glimpse of MLBTR’s “The Catcher Market” page.  Surprisingly there isn’t many much better options out there.

Could Seattle convince New York to take him off there hands?  He hasn’t exactly been heating up, hitting a whopping .061 over his last 10 ballgames, but who knows?

Oh, okay.  After typing those first couple paragraphs I see that the major flaw in such a proposal isn’t Johjima’s inability to contribute offensively (or defensively, for that matter), it’s that Hiroshi Yamauchi is still running the show, and Johjima is “one of his guys.”

Too bad..

Johjima’s not going anywhere, but I’ll continue to fantasize about Seattle and New York agreeing on a salary dump trade that rids us of Joh-K (~$5.5M per through ‘11) and brings in someone like Kei Igawa ($4M per through ‘11, pitching well in AAA).

They still have Jose Molina. They don’t need a catcher.
