Rumors: Vidro, Bedard, Ibanez +
by Jon Shields ~ July 15th, 2008
A lot of us thought it absurd that Richie Sexson was let go before the even more useless Jose Vidro, but it seems order is slowly returning to the universe. This from Prospect Insider’s sidebar:
There are some rumors starting to swirl around the team as they left Kaufmann Stadium today that designated hitter Jose Vidro’s career in Seattle is over and that he will not be with the team when they open a three-game series versus Cleveland on Friday.
We’ve heard a few different things about a possible Erik Bedard trade recently. According to Joel Sherman of the NY Post the Philadelphia Phillies are still very interested Bedard, quoting on NL official as saying, “I heard Philadelphia is not even scared off that he is hurt right now.”
Sherman is also the latest to talk about the possibility of Phillies GM Pat Gillick returning to Seattle and bringing along Yankees GM Brian Cashman.
As for as Raul Ibanez goes, we had already heard that the New York Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks and Atlanta Braves could be interested. Sherman adds the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox to that list in another post.
Having a growing list of suitors is usually a good ting (read ‘bidding war’), but in Ibanez’s case there seems to be too many ‘ifs.’ The Red Sox and Mets are both waiting on injured players to determine whether or not they need Ibanez’s services (David Ortiz and Ryan Church), while the Diamondbacks are debating whether or not Chad Tracy can keep them going down the stretch. The Dodgers, who no one would have expected to see pursuing outfielders at the deadline after starting the season with a serious outfield logjam, are probably losing patience with Andruw Jones and getting ready to pull the plug, but obviously still hoping that their multi-million dollar investment will turn it around.
Yesterday the Seattle Times’ Geoff Baker ranked Seattle’s players most likely to be traded, in order, as Arthur Rhodes, Erik Bedard, Jarrod Washburn, Raul Ibanez and Adrian Beltre. I would have to agree.
Alright, that’s all I have time for. Add anything in the comments section!

Seems like nobody is saying anything about Arthur Rhodes. At the trade deadline, it seems every team is looking for a servicable lefty guy to come out of the pen. Think we can get anything worthwhile for him?

Good point Brandon about Rhodes’s value close to the trade deadline. He’d be a good one to unload if practical.
I’m torn though…seeing Rhodes and that deliberate motion of his reminds me of a time when the Mariners were a lot less awful. A large part of me would be sad to see him go.

I think that Rhodes is easily the easiest to move on the team. The Fuentes’ of the world are far too expensive for a lot of teams, and someone will be glad to have him.
We won’t get much for him, but you can bet we’ll get back more than he’s worth.
