Marlins Interested in Rhodes
by Jon Shields ~ July 24th, 2008
In his latest blog entry, Geoff Baker refers to some reports that the Florida Marlins are interested in lefty specialist Arthur Rhodes. I must have missed these rumors, but it makes sense. The Marlins are looking to acquire a left-handed reliever, most notably Brian Fuentes, who has a large salary and will cost top prospects. Rhodes seems more the Marlins type, as I mentioned a few days ago, since his salary is next to nothing and bringing him in wouldn’t hurt their farm system.

^Sorry I thought I should clarify that since my post count doesn’t match up.
Back on topic . . . here’s a quick question . . . when did Rhodes become so desirable? I’m a little out of touch since I moved away from Seattle to Australia but I never thought of Rhodes as High Caliber. Could it be that we could sneak a good deal for him? Someone enlighten me please . . . =)

Any reliever putting up decent numbers becomes desirable around the trade deadline. There are always horribly lopsided deals going on centering around relievers, including Seattle’s worst trade of all time (Varitek/Lowe for Slocumb). Someone will gladly take Rhodes, and Seattle will get back more than he is worth. That said, getting more than Rhodes is worth doesn’t mean we’re getting anything great.
Rhodes’ numbers: 2.75 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 24 K in 19.2 innings

Speaking of lopsided trades centering relievers…if the O’s deal Sherrill for another couple prospects, I think that could quite possibly make the Bedard trade pop up in the same sentence as Varitek/Lowe for Slocumb.
The Orioles could potentially end up with like 6-7 solid prospects…and all the m’s have to show for it is a whiny primadonna who likes the DL a little too much.

lol I’m glad that my opinion on Bedard is shared. When I first heard about the chance the M’s could get him, I had my hopes up. But, as we’re used to lately, I had my hopes dashed when I did my homework on Bedard. I agree with you guys. ^^^ I remember the Varitek/Lowe for Slocumb trade and I was shocked when it happened. But even MLB.com has been making remarks about how dumb that trade is turning out to be. I wish the M’s would deal him and get rid of him. What a waste of space that guy is.
But hey, if we get a chance to have a deal work in our favor for once, I say let’s see what we can get for Rhodes.

I can’t say that I share your opinion of Bedard, exactly. I like Bedard. His talent is there. The motivation, however, is not. I don’t think he’s hurt that bad. MRI’s have come back negative, I just think that he doesn’t want to pitch.
The smart thing to do would be to keep him and deal him next off-season, hopefully when his value is higher.

Personally, I think I would rather have a player that has the motivation, but maybe not quite as much skill. As much talent as he has, he’s worthless sitting on the DL all year with minor injuries. This guy is NOT earning his paycheck and he is NOT endearing himself to fans.
With that said, I agree we have to hold on to him through this year. His trade value is rock-bottom right now. Next year he’s pitching for a new contract and probably a new team. HOPEFULLY that’ll give him a little bit of motivation to go deeper than 5 innings, to pitch through a minor injury, to pitch like the ACE he was last year in Baltimore.
I’m in the exact same boat as you Tim W. When I heard we might trade for bedard, I was excited, but then when i plunged in and looked at what Erik Bedard was all about, I went from excitement to hoping bavasi didn’t demolish our farm system too badly. In my opinion, he did demolish it pretty badly with that trade.
