Ibanez Rumors

by Jon Shields ~ July 24th, 2008

From Baseball Prospectus:

  • The Mariners have been in a holding pattern since throwing Richie Sexson overboard, making many wonder why they can’t get some deal done. With Erik Bedard sidelined by shoulder problems, the next most desirable player they have is Raul Ibanez. Several teams have inquired about his services, but all have been told that either Jose Vidro needs to be included with Ibanez in any deal, or that the teams will have to upgrade their offers to include premium prospects, especially pitchers. Ibanez is still a likely move, but teams have back-burnered him in hopes that they can get similar production for less prospect cost.
  • Looks like Seattle is desperate to unload Vidro.  We already know that they’re trying to pawn him off on the Yankees.  I would much rather Seattle pull in the “premium prospects” rather than dumping Vidro’s salary, which should be off the books after the season, but they may have to settle in the next week for the best offer out there.

In other news, the Mets are still in on Ibanez.

I’d be desperate to unload Vidro as well. I know he’s done a few good things but I don’t think he’s worth keeping. Sad part is, while I like the Mariners’ steely position on this, I hope it doesn’t end up hurting them. If they miss on a good chance to deal Ibanez for some good young talent because of their insistance about Vidro, it would be a shame really. I suppose it comes down to which is more important. If you have a great deal lined up for Ibanez that doesn’t include Vidro, you’d have to suck it up wouldn’t you? Thats they way I see things for now . . .

With all the money we’re blowing, what’s a couple more million to Vidro to finish out his tenure? I agree w/ Tim, forget Vidro, get the prospects!
