More Talk About Trading Ichiro
by Jon Shields ~ July 17th, 2008
Seattle P-I’s Jim Moore is the latest local guy to write about the possibility of trading Ichiro Suzuki. Unfortunately for us, ESPN has seemingly picked up on it, meaning we may not hear the end of it.
There are more pressing issues at hand, but would dealing Ichiro really be such a bad idea? Bad PR and bad for attendance, but if Seattle can rid themselves of at least part of his massive contract while bringing in some top-notch youth, isn’t it a move you have to at least think about making?
He’s getting old and no matter how much we believe that he is half robot, he will begin breaking down sooner or later and will not continue to do what he does for the entire duration of his contract extension.
I do not think Seattle trades him now, because they still want to field a team worth watching this season, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the new GMs first order of business this winter is to deal him.

I don’t know if Ichiro will break down like the typical old player. He’s a one of a kind player.
Plus, what you didn’t mention is that Jim Moore was verbally abused by his frequenters and commenters, the majority of them making better points than him.

Ichiro benefits the franchise whether he stays or goes, so it doesn’t really matter what happens with him. I do get a little giddy when I think about what he could possibly bring in, just because of his name and track record in the “major” stat categories.

He would honestly rake in prospects, especially right now, since he is getting hot. But I’d still prefer to keep him.
