Beltre Blocks Dodgers
by Jon Shields ~ July 24th, 2008
This season there has been a lot of reports that say Adrian Beltre is eager to return to a Southern California team. Those reports may be inaccurate, however. Beltre has a limited no-trade clause that allows him to block trades to up to eight ballclubs. We found out that one of those eight teams were the San Diego Padres when Seattle tried to deal Beltre there a year or two ago. Now, according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, the Los Angeles Dodgers are another one of those eight teams.
This is a complete surprise to me. Where are these reports that Beltre wants to return to Southern Cali coming from? No Padres, no Dodgers; that leaves the Angels as the only remaining SoCal team, and we all know that won’t happen (via trade).
Stark also mentions that the Minnesota Twins are still very interested in Beltre, despite being discouraged by his pricetag.

Somebody brought this to my attention on why some players put these teams on their no trade list. Players like Beltre and Washburn know teams like the Pirates and Royals will not trade for them so they don’t even bother putting them on their list. Instead they put teams that could trade for them that are contenders like the Yankees and Dodgers so they could get some extra incentive for waiving their no trade clause like when Vidro got the M’s to add a vesting option on to his deal for waiving his.

^hmm good point.
Nothing ever materialized with the Padres after he blocked it, and the Dodgers are said to have “packed it in” since being blocked.. so I dunno.

So much talk around Beltre all of a sudden lol.
Listen, I said it before . . . I do like Beltre. But I can see why he would be in the center of trade rumors. Blocking teams like this though make it hard to deal him, which I suppose is the point.
Still, it isn’t hopeless. I guess I keep coming back to that same question . . . is it in the Mariner’s best interest to deal him? Something tells me it just might be.
