Nats Come to Safeco
by Dustin Shires ~ June 13th, 2008
And we have a Jon appearance. Good to hear from ya. Yeah sorry about this last week and not getting anything up, I’ve had an extremely busy week. Getting out of school may seem like it has a lot of perks with free time, but I really don’t have much. I was able to watch the entire Boston series, and 2 of the Toronto games.
Current news brings us: J.J. Putz lands on the 15-day-DL with a hyperextended right elbow. I’m all for this. Morrow has been mopping up the league. This should give him a chance to shine in the closer role.
The Nationals come to Safeco for a 3 game stand, and then the Marlins follow at Safeco for 3 more. The Nationals come to Safeco on a downer. They are 2-8 in their last 10.
Friday
Shawn Hill (0-3, 4.35 ERA) vs. R.A. Dickey (1-1, 2.67 ERA)
Saturday
Tyler Clippard (0-1, 6.23 ERA) vs. Erik Bedard (4-4, 4.26 ERA)
Sunday
Tim Redding (6-3, 4.29 ERA) vs. Jarrod Washburn (2-7, 6.09 ERA)
I hate to say this, but this might be one of the most boring series I’ve ever seen. A terrible Nationals team against a “not-so-good” 2008 Mariners.
I’m hoping for a sweep, but then again I always am. Good win on Wednesday. I loved seeing a 2 out, RISP base hit. Let’s build on the Toronto series win.

I’d rather have Miguel Batista take the closer role and start transitioning Brandon Morrow to a starter

Why? Morrow has 25 Ks in 18 innings, and keeping his ERA around 1. Those are closer numbers right there…

I would never want Batista as a closer… or a starter for that matter.
Morrow seems like he could make a smooth transition to the closer role.

While the M’s always act like Morrow is one of their future starters, my gut has told me he’d be our future closer ever since last season.

You may have something there, Jon. The M’s keep thinking Morrow will be a starter down the line, but I haven’t seen that kind of promise from his offspeed stuff. He’s a guy who can overpower with the fastball, but I haven’t seen the reliability from the couple other pitches that would be necessary for the transition to a spot in the rotation.
Maybe he, like so many others, just dominated as a starter in college with one good out pitch, and now that he’s on the big stage, relief seems to be the answer for Morrow.

I’ve always thought that Morrow could be a dominant closer and that the only reason the Mariners were even thinking about making him a starter is because we have JJ. I think Morrow has the potential to be Rivera/Hoffman type dominant as a closer…

Wow… I’ve been saying Morrow would be a closer for just as long…
And I’ve said it countless times… 1 pitch pony doesn’t equal starter!

Morrow is not a 1 pitch pony anymore. His changeup has more movement then Felix, Lincecum and Hamels changeup. He also has a decent breaking ball. LL explains it perfectly.

it’s too bad though that Morrow may not have the stuff to start, because Wash and Batista are about to age out of productivity, and the M’s could use some young help in the rotation, especially going forward in a quasi-rebuilding mode.

Just from my experiences with LL, they don’t impress me with their baseball knowledge…
USSMariner are the staticians, and baseball experts, and Lookout Landing compares more to a group of frat buddies at a bar watching the game…

Runners on 2nd and 3rd
2 out
Beltre up
Intentionally walk him to get to Sexson
Sexson strikes out
I laugh for a good 10 minutes…
that is great, smart baseball by the Nationals…

Have we reached a new low???

Morrow has the pitches, but he has never been given the venue to work on them (control-wise). He could still be turned into an effective starter, but if Seattle decides to take the “sure thing” then they’ll keep him as a reliever.
@Dustin: I agree that LL can get a little crazy with their analysis at times, but overall I think you underestimate them slightly. Then again, I rarely find my self at that site anymore…
