LaRue: No Griffey in 2008

by Jon Shields ~ June 30th, 2008

A while back there was some talk about bringing Ken Griffey Jr. back to Seattle.  The logic was that he would slightly improve the offense (even during the worst year of his career) and would help curb Seattle’s slumping attendance.

Well, Griffey continues to struggle this season and the Mariners have decided not to pursue Seattle’s favorite son, according to Mariner insider Larry LaRue.

This isn’t all that surprising.  As much as we all love Junior, it’s now clear that he can’t improve the ballclub even in the slightest, and his salary wouldn’t make the boost in attendance worthwhile.  Seattle could decide to sign him over the offseason at a discounted price if he decides to play another year and if he accepts a part-time role.
