Not So Sexy

As I sat watching the Mariners game last night, I couldn’t help but realize how bad Richie Sexson is. He’s at the point where if there are two strikes on him, you may as well already mark him down for a K. After he struckout (only once this game), I ventured over to CBS Sportsline to check on his season stats. I quickly clicked through to the MLB page and then to the stats section when I did a double-take. What did I just see on the MLB front page? ::Click back:: How ironic.
Anyway. On to a few alarming statistics through 4/23 vs. Orioles
-Games with atleast one strikeout: 13/21
-Games with atleast two strikeouts: 5/21
-Games with atleast three strikeouts: 3/21
-Season high average: .259 (April 8th)
-RISP average: .176
-Count 0-2: .000 avg. - 3 K in 4 AB
-Count 1-2: .167 avg. - 5 K in 12 AB
-Count 2-2: .333 avg. - 6 K in 9 AB
-Count 3-2: .100 avg. - 7 K in 10 AB
-When the first pitch is a strike: .069 avg. - 13 K in 29 AB
Lets do a little comparison with this last statistic. Here are the numbers for some of the other high strikeout hitters in baseball…
-Carlos Pena: .154 avg. - 15 K in 39 AB
-Grady Sizemore: .237 avg. - 9 K in 38 AB
-Adam Dunn: .138 avg. - 10 K in 29 AB
-Ryan Howard: .220 - 22 K in 41 AB
Sexson’s average continues to drop (now at .205) and if last year is any indication, it won’t be coming up any time soon. The topic of taking him out of the lineup coincides with the possibility of acquiring Frank Thomas; two topics that have already been discussed in detail by bloggers, fans, and critics alike.

At least this is the last year of his contract….and probably the end of multi-year contracts for Sexson…It should be WAY WAY easier to bench Sexson now that he’s in the final year of his contract…

We have bigger fish to fry. Vidro and WIlkerson have to be upgraded before we worry about Brichie.
