Feedback: Game Threads

by Jon Shields ~ April 24th, 2008

I’ve had several community members recently ask me if I had thought about doing gameday threads.  The post itself wouldn’t typically have all that much content in it, but it would be more for discussion during the game on a given day.

Right now there are two main reasons why I don’t do these game threads.  One, I’m not sure I like the idea of having a new thread each day simply dedicated to the game that buries other posts that contain useful content.  Two, I don’t think the BBT community is quite strong enough to support these types of threads just yet.  Some of the Mariner blog giants such as Lookout Landing and USS Mariner have great success with these game threads that may receive hundreds of comments on any given night.  We, on the other hand, have just moved to this site and URL two days ago and are still reestablishing our community, and so far we only have a tiny portion of the readers registered.  Would the clutter be worth it if the threads were only producing a handful of comments every night?

So let me hear from you.  Would you registered users like to have daily game threads?   Let me know which of you would use them so I can determine if they’re worth it.  If we don’t yet have enough contributors to make daily threads worth while, another idea would be to have “series threads” instead.  The idea would be that one of the authors writes a substantial post about the upcoming series and all the in-game discussion for those three or four games is contained in a single post.  The only problem would be that the thread would not remain at the top of the site and would get pushed down by other daily posts.  Either the user would have to scroll down and locate the thread knowing it was there, or I could also put a link somewhere on the sidebar.  Would something like that work OK for you?

Let me know what you’d like, whether it be yes to game threads or series threads or no.  This site is for the readers, after all.  Help me get an idea of what would make this site more enjoyable.

Also, if you have not registered yet, I urge you to do so.  Registration only takes a minute (if that) and once you’re registered it makes commenting and such much easier than it ever was on the old site.  Your comments are the best things about writing these posts, because we get to hear other perspectives that keep the debate going long after the post is published.  You can register by clicking here.

In the meantime, we can use this post as tonight’s game thread, yes?  Jarrod Washburn takes on Adam Loewen of the Baltimore Orioles at 7:10 pm PST.  The lefty Loewen has struggled and Seattle has done well against southpaws this season, so maybe we’ll get a spark from the offense tonight.  Seattle’s gotta win this one, because losing back to back series against a club we were calling “one of the worst teams in the American League” at the season’s onset wouldn’t be the greatest morale booster.  Go Mariners!

I think putting a open series thread sounds like the best idea…It could keep discussions going more than just during each game…A link at the top of the site to the most current series thread would probably work well…

I agree. Series thread + a link at the top to the current series thread would be a good idea.

Loving the “injury updates” bar on the left by the way. Would it be possible to timestamp those entries? (or at least give dates of the posts).

The series thread and link sounds like it could work pretty well but if we get more registered users i would be all for the gameday threads.

It’s amazing that Washburn doesn’t get shelled every time he takes the mound…He’s essentially Jamie Moyer with significantly less control…

  5. Brian (219 comments)

What’s with the comment numbers next to the name by the way?

  6. Brian (219 comments)

    Ah…I get it now….I’m pretty sure I haven’t commented on here 37 times already….

Remember when the bullpen was our strength, rather than our achilles heal? This is getting ridiculous.

@Brian - All your comments from the old site were transfered over, so you have 38 between the 2 sites.

    Wow….just wow…..our bullpen sucks…

Are the O’s trying to prove to us that they got the best of the Bedard trade? 4 saves for Sherrill against us and now Jones puts them ahead 7-5 after we were up 5-0…

    eat your ralley fries…

Over/Under 7 more games the bullpen blows after a decent start before Bavasi freaks out and overpays for a “proven veteran reliever”?

  10. Jon Shields (451 comments)

    ICHIRO!!!

  11. Brian (219 comments)

I’ll take the under. I give it about 6 more bullpen blowups in the next 6 weeks before he signs a washout…

Nice to get a rare HR from Ichiro to tie the game and bail out the bullpen…

Now what do you think are the chances that the bullpen can blow this twice?

  12. Brian (219 comments)

Well….there’s the answer to that question….

  13. Brian (219 comments)

Seriously though is this the same bullpen that we had in the middle of the season last year???

  14. Jon Shields (451 comments)

I guess not, huh? This is ridiculous.

Same explanation applies for all though: It’s only April.

Are we going to be able to get away with “It’s only May”..?

  15. Brian (219 comments)

Well if were making the excuse “it’s only May” and are still at or just below .500 were going to have a LOT of work to do in June, July, August and September to have a chance to compete….

Let’s hope for a big 8th from the butthole of the lineup…#300 maybe? (I’m not holding by breath)….

    1-6 vs. Orgiales…

  17. Jon Shields (451 comments)

    There you go Kenji..

I’m surprised he didn’t throw Kenji out at first from the corner. His lack of speed never ceases to amaze me.

  18. Brian (219 comments)

Well at least we’ll have the best part of the lineup up for the 9th…

  19. Jon Shields (451 comments)

Well at least we’ll have the best part of the lineup up for the 9th…

Yeah, if we can keep it to a 1-run game. Ahh.. here comes Morrow to walk to bases loaded presumably.

Ahhh I’m getting too negative. Go M’s!

  20. Jon Shields (451 comments)

THANK YOU for the pleasant surprise Morrow! He has looked pretty decent since coming back up.. wondering what triggered the switch.

  21. Brian (219 comments)

My internet went out for a second but I was about to say that Morrow has looked pretty damn good since he’s come back…

Hmmmm…..5th save for Sherrill against us this year?….Lets hope not…And is he leading the league in saves?????

I guess you knew what you were doing when you drafted him in the 2nd round in the fantasy draft…

  22. Brian (219 comments)

    Come on Ichiro….We need a double…

  23. Brian (219 comments)

Wow….this sucks….1-6 against Baltimore….and I believe George Sherrill has as many saves against us as we have as a team…

  24. Jon Shields (451 comments)

I guess you knew what you were doing when you drafted him in the 2nd round in the fantasy draft…

    Haha that was Mitch.

I can’t believe we lost 2 series to these guys.

  25. Brian (219 comments)

Oh…thought it was you for some reason…you had to pick last right?…but your at the top right now…

Our bullpen needs to start nutting up….

  26. Jon Shields (451 comments)

^Yeah I had 16th pick. Made some good trades and lucked out a bit and I’m in first. I’m getting my ass beat so far this week though :-\

  27. Brian (219 comments)

It’s not often that you see a catcher batting lead off like Suzuki…

  28. Jon Shields (451 comments)

Brian, I put up a new game thread, errrr… series thread. Almost forgot about it.
